To my memory, the first seed was planted in high school, when I climbed into my friend’s car (he was 18 and down to buy me smokes) and was immediately transported to a distant, unfamiliar desert landscape which I found surreal and intoxicating. Turns out he was listening to the soundtrack of The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Probably the next day I went to Amoeba Records and bought the CD and listened to it every day for months.

Lalita had some help in that scramble to barricade her bedroom window. Her mother and sister, their cat, and her brother and girlfriend and their four cats, all took shelter in the apartment she shares with three roommates (and more cats). Datsounds’ OBXD is an emulation of the famous Oberheim OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 synthesizers. It features a continuously blended multi-mode filter that allows you to shape the EQ of your sounds easily, as well as a random micro-detuning feature that emulates oscillator drift, which was common in the original analog synthesizers. This plugin comes with three different color themes that you can choose from, depending on your own mood drift. While this synth does not come with any internal effects, it can be paired with delays, reverbs, and choruses in the DAW to enhance its sound.

This course is for producers and DAW users who have no trouble generating ideas, but tend to veer off track and spend all their creative energy on the production, leaving the actual song behind too early in the process. It’s also for any non-professional songwriters (musicians, composers, synthesists) who produce music at home, but lack structure in their process. The course is genre-agnostic, but is best suited for those who lean heavily on their computer to make music.

This isn’t to say that we only like songs because our brains are lazy. It has to do with how our brains process new information as it fits into a given context, in this case, how melodic notes fit into a key.

One of them that’s common in electronic and instrumental music is the development of a single idea over time. It’s also common in dance music, ambient music, and minimal music, and tends to work well with slowly developing sounds or textures. This kind of technique of form is also common in reggae, in certain kinds of West African music, and in East Indian classical music, among others — all musics that attempt to evoke transcendental states and trances while exploring a particular mood or emotional space, and utilize melody and rhythm to drive the song forward.

The building block of serialism is the 12-tone “row” in which all chromatic notes are articulated in an order chosen by the composer. The row can then be developed in several different ways. For example, inversion flips the vertical structure of the row (an inverted row will descend if it ascended before); retrograde motion plays the row in reverse.

Not only is the venue feeding folks, but it’s also providing an opportunity for connections and comfort, and maybe a moment of transcendence from the anxiety and stress of a harsh, uncomfortable, and tragic reality.
