The vocal folds are a small, yet complex structure of muscles that require a lot of hydration to work properly. The thyroarytenoid muscle (aka vocalis muscle) is the innermost part, which is covered in several layers of a Jello-like substance of mucosa called the lamina propria. It is soft, elastic, and covered with epithelium, which is a thin layer akin to loose skin. Just as our skin can get red and irritated if it’s too dry, this can happen to the vocal folds too, leading to the same issues, plus swelling.

The problem is that these tendencies are the exact opposite of what we should be doing if we want to see real improvement, according to Dr. Anders Ericsson. And we might be wise to listen. Dr. Ericsson is widely considered one of the foremost thinkers on the subject of “expertise.” His research is one of the primary sources that inspired Malcolm Gladwell’s now-famous “10,000 Hour Rule” — that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to be an expert in anything. But that rule, though memorable, is far from the whole story.

Hailing from Peru, Lara Nuh is known for mixing Afro-Peruvian rhythms, traditional flute sounds, with house beats. Her first single, “Rumba De Muerte,” is a deep house jam perfect for that late summer celebrity-tinged pool party you’ve definitely never been to. The use of traditional chants as a rhythmic element is especially tasty, I find. I especially love her Sofar performance in Lima. I feel that her ability to move between different elements, while keeping this sense of traditional Peruvian music flowing through everything she’s doing, is really excellent.
If you want to know why I didn’t lump the tag in with the bridge here for a tidy eight bars, I’ll tell you. Firstly, it just feels to me like 1+7. And secondly, the chord loop established at the start of the bridge (after the little rest) is repeated without its established fourth chord, making a kind of sneakily soon II-to-ii chord transition to the chorus. Neat. The outro is just a hold on the vi chord, proving once again that modern pop often refuses to end songs on the tonic like you’re supposed to.
Take a look back at television shows that were geared towards young children throughout the decades and listen to their themes. I’m a ’90s kid myself, so I watched a lot of shows on PBS Kids, especially Arthur, and I watched a lot of Disney movies like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules. When songs and musical pieces mimic scale degrees from these shows and movies and focus on notes 1, 2, 3, and 5 in a scale, they bring me back to my childhood just a bit.

How do you record in a studio environment without the studio price tag or having to build a studio yourself? Closets, people! And don’t remove your clothes either (the ones hanging in your closet. You’re welcome to do this naked).
These modern composers need no introduction. Their names are likely already on your favorite Spotify playlists, and rolling down with the credits of your favorite films and television shows. Their work and continued efforts to build the community of new composers and new audiences have come to define the new horizons of the first almost twenty years of this century’s wealth of concert music.

This is a crucial and often daunting step to take towards actually creating your podcast. If you’re not a very techy person, it’s extremely overwhelming even thinking about what microphone to buy, how to record, edit, and upload your podcast to your RSS feed. I’m going to make this as simple as I can so that you can go buy the correct gear and be confident it’ll do the trick.
Personally, I’ll be going with C major, because of two small details. First, the song ends on a C chord, which gives us a clue as to how the writer hears the song. Next, Halsey is singing “blue notes” from the C blues scale, which is something you can trust. But because the melody notes and loop notes make an A minor chord in first inversion, you could also hear that as an Am chord, and so an A minor tonality.
