The Italian Greyhound is the smallest of the Sighthound family.
It is an ancient breed and it is believed that its roots go back to Egypt, Turkey and Greece.
It became popular in southern Europe - especially in Italy - during the sixteenth century and eventually won the hearts of royalty throughout Europe. This tiny, personable miniature Greyhound was originally bred as a companion dog but later gained a reputation for having sufficient endurance and speed for coursing small game.
Thousands of years ago Sighthounds were bred to notice movement and to chase, catch, and kill their prey mainly by speed.
These days most Sighthounds are kept as pets, their owners can practice various dog sports with them such as racing and lure coursing.
Lure coursing is typically only open to breeds which may be considered as Sighthounds, but the problem is that the Canadian Kennel Club,
the American Kennel Club and the Federation Cynologique Internationale have different opinions about which breeds are on the list of
Sighthounds and are acceptable to compete in lure coursing trials.
The FCI considers 13 different greyhound shaped dogs being Sighthounds whilst the CKC and the AKC have more breeds on their list.
In this BLOG we will collect photographs of the 13 breeds considered by the FCI as being Sighthounds.
